- COUNTDOWN TO MACINTOSH:
- Reporters were hosted to a preview (after signing a non-disclosure
- agreement with Apple) of the MacIntosh computer, to be released
- Jan. 24, 1984. What can be quoted were Steve Wozniak's comments
- recently. He says Mac will have its own operating system..and be
- the most revolutionary computer of all time. Also past history:
- MacIntosh will sell for $2500, sport Lisa-like windows and graphic
- menus in its software, hold 128K of memory. Among those singing
- praises this Christmas season is California Technology Stock Letter
- which is urging people to buy all the Apple stock they can get
- their hands on (the newsletter predicts Apple stock will hit $100 per
- share by 1985). Meanwhile Evelyn Richards of the San Jose Mercury
- News reports one of the Mac's first ad campaigns has been dumped.
- It would have depicted IBM as the oppressive BIG BROTHER to Apple's
- MacIntosh--the computer "to set you free."

- MOST ADMIRED CORPORATION:
- IBM won this presigious Fortune Magazine designation for the second
- year in a row. The honor comes at a time when Big Blue is starting
- to look a bit pale in the eyes of far-seeing industry analysts. A survey by
- Strategic Incorporated indicates the $3000-$4000 cost of the IBM PC
- is not competitive and companies that make IBM-compatible computers
- can provide similar machines for less than $2000. It's generally
- acknowledged that IBM's language will be the industry standard by
- 1988 but the proliferation of cheaper IBM-compatible machines will
- make the real IBM the "Rolls Royce" of computers.

- BIG BLUE MUSCLE:
- Meanwhile IBM has filed a suit against a Palo Alto law firm, charging
- it with stealing trade secrets and causing "irreparable injury." The
- charge stems from a suit defended by the law firm in which two ex-IBM
- employees were charged with stealing trade secrets. The case was
- settled out of court, but this new one refers to a book in which
- details of the case were published. James Pooley, author of "Trade
- Secrets" says he was never told by IBM that details of the previous
- suit (involving disk drive devices) were not to be publicized.
- Ironically, Pooley also says in that book that IBM is always "filing
- lawsuits without good cause." He adds, "I think this one proves
- my point."

- 1984 COMPUTER PRICES:
- Don't look for the price war to wreak much more havoc. Most industry
- experts believe it's over for the coming year. Atari and Coleco have
- raised their prices (following the introduction of the PCjr) and given
- the shortage of components, there's no pressure on the others to
- lower their prices. In the past there have been 20-25% price cuts
- each year, causing a shake-out in the industry. 1984, says Cyril
- Yansouni, general manager of Hewlett-Packard's Personal Computer
- Group, will give buyers more for their money rather than paying less
- for the same capability.

- BLACK APPLES CONFISCATED:
- U.S. Customs Service officials grabbed 296 Apple-like computers at
- three California firms last weekend in an aggressive crack-down on
- alledged violations of Apple Computer's copyrights. Among the
- machines confiscated were the "Boston IV", marketed by Extra Computer
- of San Francisco, the "CB 777" from Super Computer in Santa Ana and
- the "TK-8000 PS" computers from a Cupertino, Ca. address. U.S.
- Attorney Joseph Russoniello has not decided whether to press charges
- against the firms involved. More than 2000 imitation Apple Computers
- have been seized during the past year by the Customs Department.

- REPORTING THE FACTS?
- Coleco, unnerved by all the negative publicity about the numbers of
- Adams shipped this year, has threatened ESPN's "Business Times",
- claiming the magazine misprepresented its production rates. The
- publication printed a retraction of the production estimates but
- Coleco says the second report didn't tell the whole story. "Business
- Times" reported last month that only 50,000 of the projected 500,000
- Adam Computers would be shipped by year's end. A Coleco spokesman
- has ruled out a lawsuit but says the company's lawyers are seeking
- "appropriate action" against the magazine. A Coleco spokesman would
- not tell NEWSBYTES just how many Coleco Adams have been shipped so
- far this year.

- FOLLOWING OSBORNE'S FOOTSTEPS:
- Computer Devices Inc. has filed for bankruptcy following disappointing
- sales of its DOT computer which sports a built-in printer. The company
- initially claimed its 3.5-inch floppy drives were the problem (consumers
- didn't want them) but has since explained that "internal marketing
- decisions" caused the Burlington, Massachusetts' company's downfall.
- The company is looking for a take-over as a way out of its $7.6 million
- debt. The firm is still in business (with 129 employees) and still
- promises to deliver an IBM-compatible DOT computer (unveiled at Comdex)
- by January.

- TYMSHARE SPURNED TWICE:
- This data processing and telecommunications service just can't seem to
- hold down a deal. First it was Wang, which considering a purchase of
- the company last fall. Now McDonnell Douglas Corp. has shelved the idea
- of buying out the company for $372 million. Analysts from California
- Technology Stock Letter say the deal fell through because McDonnell
- wanted to reduce its cash offer or substitute the purchase of stock.
- Meanwhile McDonnell has, instead, married Hughes Helicopter for $470
- million and left Tymshare holding the bag. Tymshare's stock dropped
- 5 3/4 points by week's end.

- WHERE THE JOBS AREN'T:
- In a surprising turnaround from a year ago, job offers for engineering
- graduates are down 50%. The Scientific Manpower Commission's report
- says recruiting and salaries are down tremendously since last spring.
- Hit hardest were chemical engineers whose job offers declined nearly
- eight percent. Others suffering are agriculture and physical science
- engineering grads. The only grads still reaping in the money are
- math, biology, computer science majors, and electrical engineers whose
- salaries were up 3.1 percent by this winter.

- KODAK GETS FLEXIBLE:
- In a licensing agreement with San Jose's Drivetec Inc, Kodak is
- venturing further into computer technology by manufacturing
- new floppies. The Kodak floppies, expected to be commercially
- available early next year, will reportedly be capable of more
- storage than any other existing floppies. The 5 1/4-inch
- flexible disks will be double-sides, double-density with 192 tracks
- per inch. Earlier this year Kodak entered the computer market
- with a flexible disk based on Isomax isotropic recording media.

- HALLMARK'S TALKING CARDS:
- In June the company introduced its own line of musical greeting
- cards. Now there's the talking card. On Dec. 26 the cards will
- be test-marketed in 10 eastern states. The card looks like a
- television set, and when opened says, "We've lost our video. Do
- not adjust your card. We'll continue with our audio. Happy
- Birthday to you." Speaking is a tiny integrated circuit in the
- card..the voice has been digitized. When we all get a chance
- to buy them for our loved ones, the talking cards will cost $10.

- NEED A RIDE? CALL VIDEOTEX:
- Honolulu's answer to traffic jams may be found on television screens.
- A proposal to put ridesharing information on teletext also involves
- allowing viewers to call in and see who's going where at any one time.
- Auto-Ride, as it's called, of course demands that a videotex terminals
- be in every home as well as the need for someone to set it up.
- A study on the subject estimates that if 50% of drivers participate
- in Auto-Ride, the average wait for anybody will be five minutes.

- TEENS SURVEYED:
- A company called Teen-Age Research Unlimited (no joke) has studied more
- than 1500 teenagers for their buying habits, lifestyles and media habits
- and has concluded that 5% bought a computer in the last year, 10% spent
- some time using a computer at home in the past week and 11% planned to
- buy a computer next year. (Last year only 3% had purchased a computer
- during the year.) The firm says nearly one and a half times as many
- boys are using computers as girls. 11% said, if they had a spare $50
- they'd spend it on computer programs.
